Basics

Name: Syaoran Li
Age: 10 years old

Magical Powers:

  • Magical & Supernatural detection: Due to his life long tutelage, Syaoran possesses a greater degree of magical sensitivity than Sakura. He is able to not only sense the Clow Cards in a greater area, but is also able to discern their presence even through attempts at cloaking or hiding. He can greatly extend his ability to detect magical activity with the use of his Rashinban.

  • Elemental Magic: Through the use of jufu (呪符) - slips of enchanted paper - Syaoran can summon and control the four main elements of nature.

  • Clow Cards: Although he claims certain Clow Cards for himself, Syaoran does not actually capture any Cards, as the act of capturing can only be performed using Sakura's sealing wand. However, if Syaoran has played a major role in weakening or cornering the Card entity prior to its capture, credit for the capture is awarded to him (as the materialized Card floats autonomously to its owner after capture). While Sakura writes her name in rōmaji on the Clow Cards, Syaoran writes his name in Chinese characters.

Skills: Master Swordsmanship: Syaoran is shown, or at least implied, to be an excellent swordsman. He wields a Chinese jian, which takes the sealed form of a hanging pendant. This sword serves as the focus for his magical powers and can project lightning.

Personality: As a member of the famous Li clan of sorcerers from Hong Kong, of which Clow Reed's mother herself was also a member, Syaoran had firmly believed that he should be the one to capture and inherit the Clow Cards, not Sakura.

When he first appears in Tomoeda, he's somewhat of a jerk to Sakura, believing himself to be above her because of his lineage and being a descendant of Clow Reed. It isn't until Sakura starts to prove herself as the Card Captor, that Syaoran backs off choosing to help aide her in her battles against the cards, as opposed to trying to one up her and obtain the cards for himself.

Initially, his attitude towards most of the people around Sakura was cold, critical, and socially awkward, to the extent of never even addressing her by her first name until a long time after he'd moved. He's also shown himself to be somewhat of a loner, which isn't surprising, given that he's been taught to be independent and self-reliant since childhood.

Roleplay Sample

Moving to New York City hadn't been such a big deal for Syaoran. He was used to traveling and moving from a place to another, so it didn't bother him much. He was still considerate of Sakura, though, considering she rarely left the peaceful little village she was born in. He, himself, was already from a very big city, so adapting wasn't a problem even though he wasn't the kind of kid who went out of his house very often back when he lived in Hong Kong with his family. While he hated to admit it, it was mostly thanks to his cousin's annoying habit of dragging him around every time she was over to see him, something he hated more than anything but that he just couldn't say no to.

A smile showed shortly on his face as he remembered the first time Sakura followed along to Hong Kong for one of his many clan meetings. Hardly anything could make him smile, especially not in a situation like the current one, but that had been a pretty amusing moment, and as weary as Sakura was from learning things the hard way, he was glad she could take it with a smile now that it was far in the past.

While Sakura seemed to have a hard time getting used to the sudden shift of time zone, Syaoran had gotten used to them through his travels when he was younger. Letting Sakura settle in seemed like the best idea, as it gave him some time to look back into his books and notes to see if anything could match with what was going on, if there was anything he had missed in his previous research. From the little they knew though, he knew it wasn't going to be easy. Still, he felt it was much better than just sitting there doing nothing while Sakura was the one having all those dreams.

One thing was true, and that he was sure of it, there was a dangerously high concentration of magical energy at a single point in this city. Even the compass was going nuts when he tried to activate it. He would have gone out to investigate, but he didn't like the idea of leaving Sakura alone so far away from home, especially not when she was sleeping. Ever since she'd become so hard to wake from her dreams, it made him a bit anxious every time she closed her eyes. He only hoped they could get a clear hint of what was going on so they could take care of it and rid her of them. It was never that simple, though.

He looked up from the notes on his laptop to look down at her. She looked very peaceful when she was asleep, always still despite the dreams. He moved an arm towards her face, moving a small wild lock of hair from her face. He knew he probably wouldn't wake her so easily and yet he was very careful in his movements as if he was afraid he'd move the hair just a bit too far and ruin the perfect image. Then he thought it was a very stupid thought because there truly wasn't anything that could ruin such a beautiful face.

Then he frowned, looking up at the screen again. There was nothing. He really had no idea what was going on, and that was a bit frightening. Back when he had to help Sakura with the cards, he knew what he was getting himself into. Now he was blind, and he hated being blind. Closing the lid, he looked to his side at the desk where the compass was lying, still acting as if a magical disaster was happening. And yet, out the window, the sky was blue, there were barely any clouds, and nothing seemed to be disturbing the usual flow of strangers coming and going, from and to work.

Everything was oddly normal.
